Biosphere Sampling Lab. Tests Results
- Total number of samples = 158
- About 36.4% of samples had an accumulation of (U-238) series radioisotopes.
- Haloxylon Salicornicum and Stippa Capensis wild plants samples had (Th-234) and (r-226) minimum concentrations of (28 and 62) Bq/Kg respectively, and maximum concentrations of (249 and 275) Bq/Kg.
- Other samples concentrated (Bi-214) and (Pb-214), three times higher than the natural levels.
- Internal and external doses that were delivered to the population were simulated for the period from (1996-1991). Doses from inhalation, ingestion of polluted meat, milk, and external exposure were (0.13,0.2,0.25,87.5)msv respectively in Basrah and Zubair cities . In Safwan city these doses were (0.27,0.39,0.51,173.5).
- Dose delivered to infants and children ( less than 15 yr ) represent 70% of total dose delivered to general Population.
- As a result 44% of Population of these areas are expected to have lung cancer and about 5% of them with fatal different types of cancers and that the effects will appear 10 years after the exposure
- Also 7.3% of Iraqi troops personnel will have same problems
Predicted Damages to Biosphere Included:
- 845100 Ton of vegetation cover is polluted.
- 31% of livestock of the area were exposed and accumulated certain levels of these isotopes.
- Microorganisms in about (1044800) are affected from contaminated soil.
