[allAfrica.com] Mechanism for Ituri Pacification Commission Approved Angola Press Agency (Luanda) NEWS February 15, 2003 Posted to the web February 18, 2003 Luanda Practical modalities to launch the Commission for the Pacification of the Ituri Region (DR Congo), were elaborated, Friday, in Luanda, by the Foreign ministers of Angola, DR Congo and Uganda. The document was elaborated Friday afternoon, during a meeting that gathered ministers Joao Miranda (Angola), Leonard She Okitundu (DR Congo) and Maombo Otafiri (Uganda) , also attended by the UN special representative to Congo, Namanga N'Gongi. After long hours of discussion, the participants approved a communique with nine points, where they reiterate the intention to take all the necessary steps to guarantee a success in the work that the commission is to carry out and to easily overcome obstacles that may affect that organ's functioning. The document adds that the different political aspirations in the Ituri region will be submitted to the appreciation of the UN secretary general special envoy for the Inter-Congolese dialogue. According to the communique the commission should effectively start functioning on 25 February 2003. It was also agreed that Uganda must guarantee security for the people who will be working in the village of Bunia, on the preparatory committee and pacification commission of Ituri. The participants have also approved a proposal made by the UN mission in the DR Congo, about organizing a cease-fire ceremony on 19 February, in the village of Bunia. According to the UN mission, this is to ensure a satisfactory result of the negotiations and guarantee the engagement of all the forces involved in the Ituri Pacification Commission. The communique stresses the possibility of increasing the number of members of that commission, supervised by the UN mission, and in agreement with parties that have signed the September Accord in 2002.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2003 Angola Press Agency.
