Sources told Addis Tribune that one student was shot dead and two sustained serious injuries in an incident described as "a clash between students from different ethnic groups, mainly Oromo and Tigrian students." The injured were rushed to the Black Lion Hospital and they were under medical treatments, it was learnt. A second-year student who flew to Addis Ababa after the clash said that tension was recently high among students of various ethnic groups in the college. He said that there were big misunderstandings particularly between Oromo and Tigrian students. "The former claim the compound belongs to them," he said, adding that some students, including the students' council, had tried their best to settle the dispute. The three casualties were reportedly from the Tigrian ethnic group. "Though there was a deep-rooted small ethnicity clashes among the students, the immediate cause for Monday's clash was not clear for us," he said. The police had closed the college indefinitely; and there were a large number of policemen guarding the compound, according to him. Addis Tribune's attempt to contact the police in the area and college administrators for further information was not successful.   ==============================================================================  Copyright © 2003 Addis Tribune.
