[allAfrica.com] [Leon_H._Sullivan_Summit] Group Blames Police for National Insecurity Daily Trust (Abuja) NEWS June 3, 2003 Posted to the web June 3, 2003 By Salisu Zakari Maradun Gusau The Global Network for Islamic Justice, a non-governmental organization with its headquarters in Gusau the Zamfara State, has strongly condemned the attitude of the police in the country for their inability to protect lives and property. In a press statement signed by the president of the organization and its secretary, Muhammed Abba Dankande and Ibrahim Tudu respectively and made available to Daily Trust in Gusau they expressed sadness over the killing of an Islamic scholar and lamented that the police have not succeded in bringing the murderers to book. This organization, according to the statement, found the murder as a gruesome and repulsive act describing the action of the killers as outrageous and provocative. The statement further asked "how could the police fail to carry out their responsibility of protecting the lives and property of every person in Nigeria?" We also call on the police not to allow to flourish, the idea that a group of persons, whether an ethnic militia or a gang of cultists under the guise of carrying out festivals to destroy innocent lives and property with impunity." Muslim Ummah, not only of this country, but indeed every Muslim is waiting and expecting justice to be done for the murdered sheikh, the statement emphasized. Global Network for Islamic Justice therefore is of the opinion that the crime must be investigated, culprits fished out and punished to serve as a deterrent to others, as silence on the part of the authorities, when lives of the innocents are terminated is totally unacceptable.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2003 Daily Trust.
