[allAfrica.com] [US-Africa_Business_Summit_Registration] Bush Administration Responds To Horn of Africa Humanitarian Crisis United States Agency for International Development (Washington, DC) PRESS RELEASE June 3, 2003 Posted to the web June 3, 2003 Washington, DC The Bush Administration, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has responded to the needs of the people of the Horn of Africa by providing 41 percent of Ethiopia's emergency food requirements for 2003 and 45 percent of Eritrea's food requirement, and an additional $32.7 million in humanitarian relief funds for emergency health and nutrition, water and sanitation and agricultural recovery activities. 12.6 million Ethiopians are in need of food aid and an additional 1.4 million require close monitoring. The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that Ethiopia will require 1.52 million metric tons of food aid in 2003. Since the onset of the crisis, in 2002, the United States pledged to deliver a total of 808,660 tons of food to the people of Ethiopia with additional pledges likely. Other donors have pledged an additional 632,707 tons. In 2003, USAID has delivered 356,389 tons of food assistance out of a total of 650,949 tons of food assistance delivered. "America is a generous nation. Where there is a need we will meet it, but our efforts must be matched by others. The resources of all donor nations will be needed. To that end, we welcome the efforts of the European Union to help us meet the challenge in this part of the world," said USAID Administrator Andrew S. Natsios. U.S. Government assistance for the Ethiopian Humanitarian crisis to date breaks down as follows: Total U.S. Government $375,866,900 Total USAID Humanitarian Food Assistance FY 2003 $340,112,775 Total USAID Humanitarian Relief in FY 2003* $ 30,666,892 (* includes assistance for emergency health and nutrition, water and sanitation and agriculture recovery activities) Total State Department Humanitarian Assistance in FY 2003 $ 5,087,233 USAID Assistance for Ethiopia has been or will be delivered through the following organizations: Food: World Food Programme (WFP) 344,230 tons of food assistance $164,508,100; Joint Emergency Operation Plan, an NGO consortium 363,050 tons of food assistance $157,203,575; International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) 29,740 tons of food assistance $ 18,401,100. Humanitarian Relief for Ethiopia: Non Government Organizations $ 23,432,000; UN Agencies, World Health Organization, ICRC $ 7,168,000. Eritrea - Drought affected people: 1.4 million; Estimated food aid required: 290,000 metric tons.
