The Government Of Finland Donates 750,000 Euros To The AU Peace Fund African Union (Addis Ababa) PRESS RELEASE December 30, 2003 Posted to the web December 30, 2003 Addis Ababa The Government of the Republic of Finland and the African Union have signed, today, an agreement, according to which the Government of Finland will make a contribution of 750, 000 Euros to the AU Peace Fund to support the activities of the AU on conflict prevention, peace-making and peace-building. According to the agreement, signed by the Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Finland in Addis Ababa, Mr. Kari Toiviainen, on behalf of his Government, and Amb. Sam Ibok, Director, Peace and Security Department, representing the AU Commission, the Government of Finland will make the funds available to the AU in three installments of 250 000 Euros each, between December 2003 and December 2005. Speaking on behalf of the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Amb. Ibok expressed AU's appreciation to the Government of Finland, which has always supported the activities of the OAU/AU. He assured Mr. Toiviainen that the AU would do its best to comply with the terms and conditions of this agreement, by ensuring that the funds are utilized in a transparent and accountable manner. In his remarks, Mr. Toiviainen, while reiterating his Government's support to the AU, noted the central role the AU is playing to bring about peace and security in Africa. The donation of the Government of Finland to the AU Peace Fund represents its second contribution to support the activities of the AU relating to peace and security. In 1998, it contributed $ 180, 564 to the Peace Fund to support the activities of the OAU in Burundi.
