US, Kenya in Joint War Games

Kenya and the United States will next week undertake joint military exercises.
The war games, to last about two weeks along the Coast, will involve several
hundred Kenyan and US personnel and is part of on-going joint annual bilateral
exercises.
Like its predecessors, 'Edged Mallet '04' provides the United States and Kenyan
armed forces with the opportunity to refine their operational skills,
techniques and procedures.
The exercises would enhance their ability to work together effectively and
strengthen the long-standing military relationship between the two countries.
Most of the activities - which include small arms training, reconnaissance and
joint patrols - will take place on Kenyan military areas and ranges and thus
will remain largely invisible to the general public.
'Edged Mallet '04' also provides an opportunity for the two countries'
militaries to co-operate on various community relations and humanitarian
projects.
Among those planned are medical and dental clinics, and United States Marines
will help refurbish a boy's secondary school.
Such projects also help provide practical training for construction engineers,
medical staff and other specialists.
