Uganda, Kenya Plan to Disarm K'jong New Vision (Kampala) NEWS February 21, 2004 Posted to the web February 23, 2004 By Rashid Muzungyo Kampala The Police chief, Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala, has said Uganda and Kenya have agreed on a joint programme to disarm the Karimojong and Pokot pastoral communities. "We are going to sandwich the Pokot and Karimojong who have been raiding cattle and killing innocent people along the Uganda and Kenya border," he said. Wamala was addressing residents at Suam border town at the end of a one-day working visit to Kapchorwa on Tuesday. He said the exercise, which had been delayed by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebel insurgency in the north, would resume soon. According to district records, the rustlers have killed about 5,000 people since 1953 to date. Recently, 30 people, mostly women and children, were killed in Suam sub-county. Wamala said the two states would also hold a maiden regional military manoeuvre. He emphasised the importance of cooperating with security forces in combating crime. Wamala praised the people of Kapchorwa for their hard work and assured them of security and to fight poverty. Area resident district commissioner Joseph Arwata and the LC5 chairperson, Nelson Chelimo, attended.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 New Vision.
