Police Kill 422 Robbers in 3 Months

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Tafa Balogun, yesterday disclosed
that 422 armed robbers were killed within three months this year.
Speaking at a world press conference in Abuja, Balogun said 476 suspected armed
robbers were also arrested within the same period, while 28 policemen were
killed.
He revealed that the policemen were killed in gun encounters with robbers. The
IGP appealed to the public to provide the police with necessary information
about criminals, their hideouts, illegal fire arms, their manufacturers and
those keeping them.
He said 58 policemen were killed by bandits in the year 2003, and noted that
the figure of cops lost in action had dropped when compared with 172 recorded
in 2002.
Mr. Balogun disclosed that 8,300 armed robbers were arrested last year as
against 7,048 nabbed in the year 2002.
