[allAfrica.com] [Bryant_Law_Group] Army Kills 22 Rebels New Vision (Kampala) NEWS April 14, 2004 Posted to the web April 14, 2004 By Ali Mao and Chris Ochowun Kampala THE UPDF on Sunday killed 22 Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels in Gulu and Lira districts, including aides of Odhiambo, the LRA field commander. Some 11 were killed in Okwongo village Adwari sub-county in Lira district. There were premature celebrations in Lira on Monday morning over rumours that Odhiambo himself had been killed. One of the rescued captives, however, yesterday said it was Odhimabo's top aide Cpl. Steven Obwoya. The north and northeastern region UPDF army spokesman, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, said the demise had made the LRA more vulnerable to the UPDF. "Odhiambo survived by a whisker, but we are still on his heels. It will be much easier to destroy Odhiambo and his rebel group if they attack us," Ankunda said. He said the 103 Battalion under Maj. Rwashande killed Obwoya when the army intercepted the rebels east of Okwongo village. In Gulu, the army said they killed rebels in combined offensive against the deputy LRA commander, Otti and his group in Kilak county. The Army spokesman based in Gulu, Lt. Frank Baraza, yesterday said they had stepped up operations to get rid of Otti and his fighters who are still roaming in the Kilak hills. "We are on Otti's tail and we shall make sure that we eliminate him and his fighters who are roaming in Kilak and Arebe hills," Baraza said. He said they captured one rebel with four sub-machine guns, one grenade, five empty magazines of short machine guns and 91 loose rounds of ammunition of various kinds.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 New Vision.
