[allAfrica.com] [The_Leon_H._Sullivan_Summit_Dinner] Emergency Rule in Plateau : Don't Work with Alli, CAN Orders Christians Daily Champion (Lagos) NEWS May 20, 2004 Posted to the web May 20, 2004 By Moses Ezulike Jos Barely 24 hours after taking office as Sole Administrator of Plateau State, Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Chris Alli (rtd) faces obstacles as the youth wing of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the area yesterday vowed to frustrate him. They have urged indigenes of the largely christian state to reject any offer of appointments to be made by the Sole Administrator. The youths also stated that the declaration of a state of emergency on the state was part of an alleged Hausa-Fulani agenda to islamise and cow the christian Plateau, adding that the move would fail. At its media briefing titled: "A Jihad on Plateau" addressed by the president of CAN youth wing, Rev. Matthias Ndiam, the christian youths said they will resist the imposition of emergency rule in the state despite the heavy presence of soldiers in the area. The youths said if all pleas to rescind the imposition of the state of emergency failed, they would push for the resignation of all sons and daughters of the state holding federal appointments. Asserting that they were still collating the statistics of CAN members killed in the Kano crisis which would be made public soon, the christian youths condemned President Obasanjo for not declaring emergency rule in Ondo and Lagos where serious chieftaincy and ethno-religious conflicts had in the past claimed scores of lives. The youths pleaded with southerners to join the christian Middle Belt to resist an alleged Jihad (holy war) agenda of the far North.   ===============================================================================  Copyright © 2004 Daily Champion.
