[allAfrica.com] [celtel.com] LRA Kill 40 in Sudan New Vision (Kampala) NEWS June 10, 2004 Posted to the web June 10, 2004 By Richard Komakech Kampala LRA rebels have killed over 40 people and injured several others in southern Sudan. Rev. Paul Yugusuk, the head of the Anglican Church in the area, said in Kampala that the attack on Tuesday night left hundreds homeless and several fleeing to areas controlled by the Sudanese People's Liberation Army (SPLA). The rebels, who are said to have entered from Juba, attacked Lomega, Lokiliri, Goke and Nisitu villages under the Anglican archdeaconry of Lomega. The priest said they had counted 41 bodies in Lomega and had sent a team to assess the conditions in the other villages. "All these villages have now been abandoned and some people have moved as far as Juba. We are now trying to co-ordinate with our people to get a picture of the whole situation," Rev. Yugusuk said. He said the rebels, who also looted several food items, abducted three women, but released one later. Yugusuk was in Kampala to collect medical supplies for the displaced people in the area. "The disease rate is also very high and many people are succumbing to illness resulting from poor hygiene and harsh weather conditions," he said. A similar attack by the LRA rebels occurred in January and 17 people were killed. Asked about the effect of the recent peace pact signed between the Sudanese government and SPLA, Yugusuk said the deal had no impact so far. "We are hearing reports about people celebrating the agreement but our people are living in fear because of the continuous war," he said.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 New Vision.
