The committee was yesterday divided over the payment of US$50,000 to former rebel leader and priestess Alice Lakwena and how her spirits would fight Kony. Committee chairman Simon Mayende (Samia Bugwe South) said the Government was luring Lakwena to return to launch a counter spiritual war against Kony. He said Lakwena might be given some lorries to transport her property. Benedict Etonu (Amuria) said, "Can't we hire mercenaries to kill Kony? Kony is a devil. He haunts people who were abducted by him. Why give him money after he has killed many people? Children abducted by him cannot talk about Kony outside a house or even inside a house because they fear Kony will hear them and sees them everywhere." The committee was raising questions on the Amnesty Amendment Bill 2003, the Defence Policy and planned to begin scrutinising the Government white paper on the purchase of helicopters. Etonu said his constituents were also concerned that Lakwena had killed many people and was now being given money. Sam Piri Abura (Matheniko) said there was reason in giving money to her. He said he has seen Lakwena doing her business in Kenya and that she had many slaughterhouses. The Amnesty Amendment Bill 2003 seeks to deny amnesty to leaders of rebellion.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 New Vision.
