[allAfrica.com] [celtel.com] Kony Crops Slashed New Vision (Kampala) NEWS July 19, 2004 Posted to the web July 19, 2004 By Alex Odongo Kampala THE Army commander, Lt. Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, has said the UPDF on Wednesday cut down all the crops in Joseph Kony's plantation in southern Sudan. Nyakairima held a press conference on Thursday at the 4th Division Army Barracks in Gulu. Flanked by the UPDF northern spokesman, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, Nyakairima briefed the press on the progress of the army's pursuit of Kony into Sudan. He said while pursuing the rebels in southern Sudan, the UPDF came across LRA plantations of simsim, sorghum and beans, 2km south of Nsitu. He said they also discovered a cassava plantation near Latanya Hill in Pader district, suspected to belong to the rebels. "We shall not uproot the cassava, but occupy the area and ambush any rebels attempting to harvest it," Aronda said. Nyakairima said the strategy was to starve the rebels so they weaken from hunger and surrender. He said the Sudan government had stopped supporting the Lord's Resistance Army directly, though some Sudanese Army officers were still providing supplies.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 New Vision.
