[allAfrica.com] [celtel.com] War Vets Co-Op Against Illegal Settlements At Caledonia Farm The Herald (Harare) NEWS July 20, 2004 Posted to the web July 20, 2004 Harare WAR veterans resettled at Caledonia Farm, adjacent to Tafara high-density suburb in Harare, said unscrupulous people who were illegally demarcating pieces of land for themselves at the farm want to tarnish the image of war veterans and the Government. Several people have built makeshift houses at the farm saying they have failed to secure accommodation in different suburbs of Harare. They claimed that certain individuals, who have since left the farm, allocated the people pieces of land after they approached them. The war veterans who were settled at the farm by the Government in 2000 said they have formed a housing co-operative to build houses for its members. "We have plans for the whole development, but there seems to be certain people who are coming to haphazardly settle at the farm, tarnishing our image at the farm as squatters," said Cde Conrad Gombakomba, chairman of Tongoville Park Housing Co-operative. He said the housing co-operative, which has a total of 2 460 members, would start building permanent houses once the surveying of the land has been finalised. The Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing confirmed that the housing co-operative was registered and was given the mandate to develop the farm under Government's National Housing Delivery Programme.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 The Herald.
