[allAfrica.com] [allAfrica.com_Home_Page] Northern Governors Sabotaged Peace Parley - Turaki This Day (Lagos) NEWS July 28, 2004 Posted to the web July 28, 2004 By Bala Nasir Dutse Governor Saminu Turaki of Jigawa State has accused northern governors of sabotaging the planned peace and unity confab which was scheduled to take place last month in Kaduna. Turaki, described the north as a destabilised region and alleged that his colleagues have politicised the planned conference and frustrate his efforts Speaking when the Special Assistant to the President on Migration and Special Affairs, Mrs. Onalaja Soyinka, paid him a visit in his office, he said, his efforts at bringing all people in the region together was misunderstood and politicised, just as it was being made a religious issue by his colleagues. Turaki, who was the immediate past chairman of the 19 Northern Governors Forum lamented that his colleagues underscored the issue of peace and unity in the entire nation and African continent. He noted that "about 70 per cent of our natural and human resources are lost to destructions through various conflicts in many places around the country," adding that for concrete measures against such recurrences, we seek to develop Nigeria. Failure to forestall them, he said, would lead the country to further decimation and make development elude us for the time being. Turaki, therefore, appealed to the Special Assistant to, as a matter of urgency, come out with a blue-print capable of addressing the perennial human and natural resources that have been bedevilling the country once and for all. He also urged members of the presidential committee on internally displaced persons to work towards adding value to lives of displaced people, since they found themselves in the present situation as a result of worthless conflicts that brought no good to anybody.Northern Govs Sabotage Peace Parley - Turaki   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 This Day.
