[allAfrica.com] [celtel.com] Foreign Minister Highlights UN Role in World Peacekeeping Angola Press Agency (Luanda) NEWS September 25, 2004 Posted to the web September 27, 2004 Luanda Angolan foreign minister João Miranda highlighted today in New York (USA) the role of the United Nations Organisation (UNO) in guaranteeing peace and security in the world. Addressing the UN 59th General Assembly, Joao Miranda said that due to the horrors of violence, poverty and famine, the UN assembly members are once again faced with the hard tasks of evaluating the implementation of their decisions and seek new solutions to the problems afflicting millions of people. "These solutions necessarily require mechanisms of international cooperation," he stated. The United Nations, he also said, should remain the State's most relevant mechanism to face the world's new challenges that have to do with guaranteeing peace, security, fight terrorism, famine, human rights violations, deterioration of environment, transnational organised crime, drugs trafficking and Hiv/Aids. Meanwhile, Joao Miranda stated that the difficulties facing the United Nations in dealing with situations that seriously shook the international security of late have exposed the weaknesses of its structures and functioning.
