[allAfrica.com] [allAfrica.com_Top_Headlines] North to Get U.S. Aid New Vision (Kampala) NEWS September 25, 2004 Posted to the web September 27, 2004 By Emmy Allio Kampala Uganda is to receive military and humanitarian aid from the US after the United States House of Representatives and the Senate passed the Northern Uganda Crisis Response Act last month. On August 2, President George Bush signed into law the bill which was passed by the US House. UPDF spokesman Major Shaban Bantariza on Tuesday said, "The motive of the Act was for the US government to get authorisation from the House and Senate to pave way for aid to Uganda." He said the aid was to hire and manage transport helicopters which are needed in the north war. A statement from the Ministry of Defence quoted by Afrol News said minister Amama Mbabazi hailed the Act, saying "We welcome the cooperation of the US and other countries in our efforts to root out terrorists and restore peace and stability throughout the ravaged areas of the north. We are determined to embark on a programme of rehabilitation and reconstruction based on a spirit of justice and reconciliation."   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 New Vision.
