[allAfrica.com] [New_Vision,_Kampala] Delta Pledges Support for Resource Centre This Day (Lagos) NEWS September 28, 2004 Posted to the web September 28, 2004 By Jaiyeola Andrews London Delta State government has pledged to support the proposed Ijaw Resource Centre to be established in London, United Kingdom, using it as a source of information on some of the issues currently going on in the state. Fielding questions from newsmen in London, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, commended the Ijaw Peoples Association of Great Britain and Ireland for their foresight, adding that the state will continue to identify with their efforts at establishing the centre. "The Ijaw Peoples Association, I think, is opening up an avenue for all of us. These people have started this thing, we must give them a lot of support, it is an eye-opener not to just Ijaw people, but for all of us," Uduaghan said. The SSG commended them for taking a bold initiative towards the establishment of a resource centre, noting that it was a pointer to something great coming to the Niger Delta region in no distant time. He however called on Ijaws outside Nigeria to come to Delta State to contribute their quota towards its development, adding that he will be getting in touch with them often. Asked if he spoke with indigenes in the diaspora during the fund raising event, Uduaghan said, "in the course of this visit I have come across some of them that are here, some were my school mates, some were my class mates. From the discussions we had, they are very eager to come home to contribute their quota." He restated government's commitment to ensuring lasting peace in the state, as well as leaving an unrivalled legacy behind, after the expiration of the tenure of Ibori's administration enjoining all Deltans and indeed Nigerians to live in peace and harmony, with a view to ensuring that development and democracy thrives.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 This Day.
