The study conducted by an NGO, Partnership for African Sustainability (PAES), said scarce resources were a result of environmental degradation, which aggravated armed conflict. The study was conducted in Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Burundi. PAES chief executive Mersie Ejigu said many countries in Africa had experienced massive deforestation, decline of soil fertility, pollution of rivers, flooding and a high population growth. He said a combination of these factors had negatively affected the environment, fuelling armed conflict. Ejigu said the communities competed for scarce resources to survive.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 New Vision.
