News (Lagos) NEWS October 18, 2004 Posted to the web October 18, 2004 Niger Delta Volunteer Force (NDVF) militia leader, Asari Dokubo, has disclosed that his force has recruited 500,000 volunteers to continue the struggle of the Ijaws for resource control. The Ijaw warlord who recently signed a peace accord with the federal government over the attacks in the area said membership forms were still being given to other volunteers. He vowed that his group would return to war in the region unless the federal government meets its stated demands. The threat comes on the heels of a peace accord brokered two weeks ago by the federal government between the feuding NDVF and the Niger Delta Vigilante, led by Asake Tom. Dokubo told newsmen in Port Harcourt that the two groups had resolved to maintain a ceasefire "if the government would provide the conditions for a lasting peace." He listed the conditions to include "unfettered access to promote our legitimate aspirations within democratic norms and fundamental rights and obligation." Dokubo said his mission remained the emancipation of the Niger Delta people and stressed that this would never be compromised. "We will wait and see their responses to the issues raised," he said.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 P.M. News.
