[allAfrica.com] Attack On Ibori's Convoy: 100 Mobile Policemen Deployed in Edo Border Towns Vanguard (Lagos) NEWS October 19, 2004 Posted to the web October 19, 2004 By Osaro Okhomina Benin City EDO State Police Commissioner, Mr Paul Ochonu yesterday ordered the deployment of a hundred mobile policemen to border towns in the state following intelligence report that the armed bandits involved in the attack on security aides of Governor James Ibori of Delta state last weekend that led to the killing of two policemen were those involved in a similar attack on a luxury bus last week. Already, the Command with the approval of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Tafa Balogun, has set up additional seven checkpoints in the state capital and identified those allegedly involved as having their hideout in the city. Speaking with Vanguard in Benin City yesterday, the police spokesman, Mr Fatai Kiyomi yesterday said the bandits were easily identified by their mode of operation and statement of victims gathered by intelligence officers. Kiyomi said, "we believe strongly that the same syndicate that robbed a luxury bus last week is involved in the attack on our men from Delta state. They have the same way and manner of operation. The command after a security meeting has approved the setting up of seven additional check points in some border entries into the city and they will be manned by mobile policemen to be deployed soon. "We must admit that we have not done enough in bringing them to book, but we must say we are on intelligence gathering and have discovered that they are the same group involved in the attack on the luxury bus along the byepass in which a woman was killed. "We are onto them and would not sacrifice our duty for them in any way", he said. The police spokesperson said intelligence reports showed a peculiar pattern used by the robbers in attacking and killing their victims, he said, "one of their victims told us that they are in the routine of locking anybody inside the boot of a car and positioning such stolen vehicle in the area in the pretence that it is broken down and the other group goes into operation. "It was what happened to the men from the Delta Command, they ran into the robbery and never knew that those they overtook at the back were robbers."   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 Vanguard.
