[allAfrica.com] [celtel.com] Mayombo's Kin Flees Over 900m The Monitor (Kampala) NEWS November 1, 2004 Posted to the web November 1, 2004 By Zurah Nakabugo Kampala A brother to the Chief of Military Intelligence (CMI), Col. Nobel Mayombo, has disappeared after accumulating debts of over Shs900 million. Sources at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) told The Monitor at the weekend they had received complaints related to Mr Dan Rabwoni. CID chief, Ms Elizabeth Kuteesa, said her office had received complaints from several businessmen in Kampala who claimed Rabwoni had disappeared after failing to pay his debts. The Acting Commissioner for Crime, Mr Edison Mbiringi, said complaints against Rabwoni relate to issuance of false cheques which were not honoured by banks. A relative told The Monitor on Friday Rabwoni had been missing for about a month. Mr Abraham Rabwoni, a brother to Dan, said by telephone, "Yes it is true he disappeared. We used to work together at Shell but now it is a month or two since I last saw him. I don't know and I can't tell where he is." Mbiringi said they had recorded complaints of claims amounting to over Shs900 million. Kutesa said, "We are aware of the complaints. He has been missing and it has been reported to Police." "In as much as some people have been able to come up and say how much he owes them, there are others who have complained but do not want to reveal figures. They still hope he will come back and pay them," Kuteesa said. Rabwoni is believed to have fled to the UK. Police said the Managing Director of RedFox Forex Bureau, Mr Dave Makendra, had filed a complaint in which he alleges that Rabwoni gave him a false cheque of Shs50 million. The cheque was to be drawn on Stanbic Bank, IPS building branch. Redfox is opposite Shell Capital where Rabwoni runs a tyre clinic business. He also deals in cellphone business, The Monitor has learnt. Asked to confirm the figures, Kuteesa said, "We need to quantify all those complaints. There are people who think they have been ripped off and there are those who still think he is still organising himself to pay them. So we need to separate those two."   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 The Monitor. All rights reserved.
