[allAfrica.com] [AED_Fundraising_Gala_Dinner_2004] Canada Assists African Union in Improving Darfur Security Addis Tribune (Addis Ababa) NEWS November 5, 2004 Posted to the web November 5, 2004 Canada announced last week that it will provide 135 million birr to the expanded African Union Mission to the Sudan (AUMIS). According to a press release, Canada's contribution comes as a timely response to the AU's decision to expand its mission to 3,320 from 390 people. The AU mission, composed of contingents from a number of African countries, will help foster stability and enhance civilian protection in the region. Commenting on the contribution, Ambassador Rosaline Murray welcomed the move as a "first important step" in the search for a "durable" solution for the Darfur crisis. She said Canada welcomed the ongoing efforts of the AU and Canada would do all it could to fulfill its commitments with the AU in the resolution of this problem, including helping in alleviating the sufferings of the Sudanese. Since October 2003, Canada contributed some 37 million dollars in humanitarian assistance to the crises in Sudan, including 25.9 million dollars to respond specifically to the Darfur crisis, while simultaneously pursuing vigorously diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.   ==============================================================================  Copyright © 2004 Addis Tribune.
