[allAfrica.com] [allAfrica.com_Sports] Ivorian Refugees Flee Into Liberia The NEWS (Monrovia) NEWS November 9, 2004 Posted to the web November 9, 2004 By Alloycious David Monrovia UNHCR Deploys in Nimba County As violence resumed in neighboring Ivory Coast, More than 1,000 Ivorian refugees have reportedly crossed into Liberia and are presently seeking refuge in Buutuo and surrounding towns near the border in Nimba County. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Ivorian refugees include women and children and are being accommodated in the Northern border town of Buutuo. Francesca Fontanini, UNHCR Public Information Officer said UNHCR, in conjunction with its implementing partners, has provided basic non-food items including mattresses, blankets, and other substantial items for the upkeep of the refugees. Fontanini said that UNHCR is trying to improve the drinking water condition in Buutuo because according to her the number of hand pumps in the town could not cater to the refugees and the citizens of the area. The UNHCR Public Information Officer also said that UNHCR is also concentrating on the transfer of the refugees to the Saclepea Refugee camps in Mah District, also in Nimba County. "But the deplorable road condition is a set back to the process", she lamented.
