[allAfrica.com] [AED_Fundraising_Gala_Dinner_2004] The Chairperson Of The Commission Of The African Union Welcomes The Signing By The Sudanese Parties Of The Protocols On Humanitarian And Security Situations African Union (Addis Ababa) PRESS RELEASE November 9, 2004 Posted to the web November 9, 2004 Addis Ababa The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Mr. Alpha Omar Konare, welcomes the signing in Abuja on 9 November 20004 by the Government of the Sudan (GoS), the JEM and the SLM/A, of the Protocols on the Improvement of the Humanitarian Situation in Darfur, and on the Enhancement of the Security Situation in Darfur. It is the Chairperson's hope that the signing of these two protocols will contribute to the improvement of the humanitarian and security situations on the ground, in the context of the steps taken by the AU to strengthen the African Mission in the Sudan (AMIS). It will also facilitate the current efforts in the search for a comprehensive and lasting political settlement of the conflict in Darfur. The Chairperson also commends the progress made by the Parties on their discussions regarding the Declaration of Principles (DoP) that would guide their future deliberations and constitute the basis for a just, comprehensive and durable political and socio-economic resolution to the conflict in Darfur. He stresses the need to expedite discussions on this issue to allow for further progress in the peace talks. It is worth mentioning that the two protocols signed by the Parties aim at reinforcing the Humanitarian Ceasefire Agreement signed in N'djamena, Chad, on 8 April 2004. In this respect, the Chairperson strongly appeals to the Sudanese Parties to scrupulously abide by the commitments they have taken in the N'djamena Ceasefire Agreement as well as in the two Protocols. The Chairperson commends the role and the personal commitment of President Olusegun Obasanjo, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Current Chairman of the African Union.
