[allAfrica.com] [stanbic.com] Taylor Takes Issue With UNMIL The Inquirer (Monrovia) NEWS December 8, 2004 Posted to the web December 8, 2004 Monrovia Engineering Professor Emmet A. Taylor says he detects contradiction in the United Nations Mission in Liberia's pronouncement that Monrovia is safe, while at the same time restricting its personnel from residing in certain parts of the city. Mr. Taylor wondered how safe Monrovia is, when UNMIL has placed restriction on its personnel not to live in certain quarters of the city except Central Monrovia through Congo Town. He said it has been clearly stated that greater Monrovia has been stabilized and is safer than when the previous government was here. He said, it is however unfortunate that the same UNMIL would place restriction on its personnel living in certain quarters, thereby creating housing problem for them. Expressing his opinion on the coming of a floating ship(hotel) to alleviate the housing problems said to be facing UNMIL personnel, Mr. Taylor said, "I am of the thinking that the United Nations Secretary General's Special Representative (SRSG) Ambassador Jacques Klein is a decent man, but is being il-advised to bring in the hotel ship." Mr. Taylor, a former Minister of Public Works then said, UN personnel should be allowed without any restriction to live in Paynesville, Gardnersville and other parts of the city, where there are decent homes, if indeed the city is safe. He said this will go a long way in addressing the issue of rent hiking and shortage of houses, reasons advanced for the coming of the Hotel Ship into the country.   ===============================================================================   Copyright © 2004 The Inquirer.
