[allAfrica.com] [Africa_2005] Sierra Leone Receives US$686.2m Standard Times (Freetown) NEWS January 13, 2005 Posted to the web January 13, 2005 By Mohamed Konneh According to a recent World Bank report, as of May 2004, the Bank had approved a total of five (5) IBRD loans and forty (40) IDA credits and grants for Sierra Leone, for a total amount of approximately US$686.2 million. The commitment of the Bank to eight ongoing operations is nearly US$184 million. This revelation was made by the Bank against the background of its recognition of the country's successful conclusion of the decade-long civil war and the re- establishment of security as well as restoring public services across the country. The Report named especially the completion of the first local government elections in thirty-two (32) years in May last year. The challenge ahead, it noted, is to continue the process of rebuilding as well as ensuring a good environment policy for economic growth and job creation for its inhabitants. It reiterated the Bank commitment to support the country in this mission, to fight poverty, promote economic development and improve the living standards of the people.
