They complained that whenever they are disciplining their wives, the police intervene and harass them and at times arrest them. Damulira was in the island to assess the development programmes funded by the government and also to listen to the problems of the islanders on Monday. The residents said beating a wife to discipline her was their cultural freedom, which the police are not supposed to deprive them of. They said if police did not stop, they would fight back. While giving their views on the men's complaint, women said some of their colleagues were unndisciplined and needed to be beaten. Ddamulira told the residents it was the duty of the police to intervene wherever there was violence. He said there was nothing to base on to stop the police from doing their work. He advised men to give simpler punishments to their wives, which would not attract intervention of the police. Prostitutes asked police not to interfere with their work. They said they would deal with men who donot pay for services.   ==============================================================================   Copyright © 2005 The Monitor. All rights reserved.
