While addressing hundreds of Muslims at Old Kampala mosque yesterday after the Idd Adhuha prayers, Khatami said Muslims should not engage in terrorist acts. He, however, said Muslims should not accept oppression. "We are human beings and are entitled to protecting our rights as Muslims. We should not accept any suppression," he said. Khatami, who was here on a two-day state visit, arrived for prayers at 9:30am under tight security. He was clad in a black turban and blue Islamic robe. The Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Mubajje, led the prayers. Deputy National Political Commissar Kirunda Kivejinja, regional co-operation state minister Augustine Nshimye and other government officials accompanied Khatami. Khatami asked Ugandan Muslims and Christians to live in harmony for development. "If there is peace and co-existence in this country between the Muslims and non-Muslims, there will be development," he said. He also advised Muslims to seek knowledge in science and technology if they want to assume power. The slaughtering of animals on Idd Adhuha marks the end of the Islamic Calendar (425AD). Mubajje asked Khatami to help the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council get fund- generating projects. "We are fighting for unity among Muslims in this country but we have financial problems and can't sustain our projects," Mubajje said.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2005 New Vision.
