[allAfrica.com] [Africa_2005] Sudan VP to Visit Uganda The Monitor (Kampala) NEWS January 25, 2005 Posted to the web January 24, 2005 By Hussein Bogere Kampala Dr John Garang, the Vice President of Sudan, is expected to visit the country today. Garang would present a lecture under the theme 'The Sudan Peace Agreement and Pan Africanism Challenges to the Future'. Mr David Mafabi, a member of the Pan African Movement said the lecture would be at Hotel Equatorial. Mafabi said the lecture was earlier scheduled for today but it was postponed to Friday at 10pm. Garang, the leader of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement recently signed a peace deal with the Khartoum government, bringing an end to one of the longest civil wars in Africa. The signing of the peace pact took place in Nairobi and was President Yoweri Museveni was among the witnesses. Garang is also expected to attend the NRA 19 anniversary celebrations at Kololo Airstrip tomorrow. When the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Onen was contacted, he said he was not aware of Garang's visit. "Maybe you should find out from the State House," Onen said in a telephone interview. Sources at the State House could not confirm the visit saying: "No information is available at the moment". The President's Press Secretary, Mr Onapito Ekomoloit, could not be reached for a comment. Meanwhile, Joseph Miti reports that the Ministry of Education and Sports will soon carry out a screening exercise on private secondary schools. The exercise is aimed at to scraping out those operating below standards.
