The herdsmen fled with animals and to evade the Uganda police, they stacked their guns into bags and loaded them on donkeys at the border. Sources at Amadat said the herdsmen from Kasei, Alale, Kacheliba and Katikomor were among those fleeing. West Pokot District Commissioner Stephen Ikur said those fleeing would eventually be caught since Uganda was conducting a similar operation. In a report, the Catholic Church Justice and Peace Commission said more than 60,000 illegal guns were in the hands of herdsmen. Kenyan Pokots have relatives in Moroto and Nakapirprit in eastern Uganda. In 1984,1986, 1989 and 1997, the Government used high-tech military equipment, including helicopters, in unsuccessful operations. Rift Valley Provincial Senior Assistant commissioner of police in charge of operations, Mr Anthony Kimeto, is one of the senior officers involved in the present operation. Yesterday, he held a meeting at Kapenguria police station.   =============================================================================  Copyright © 2005 The East African Standard.
