[allAfrica.com] [celtel.com] Rise in Cultism Worries Fayose This Day (Lagos) NEWS April 29, 2005 Posted to the web May 2, 2005 By Justice Ilevbare Lagos Ekiti State governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose, has expressed worries over the rising wave of cult activities in the nation's tertiary institutions. The governor particularly expressed concern with the wanton destruction of lives and property that usually attends cult clashes in institutions of higher learning. Fayose, in a chat with newsmen advocated a policy by government that would take care of youth development in the country. "I get worried anytime I hear about clashes by secret cult members in higher institutions and I begin to ask myself questions. Why should any reasonable person preoccupy himself with cultism? What do they stand to benefit?" The governor regretted that most youths that would have been useful to the nation had been cut down at the prime of their lives by cultists who, he said, have no respect for human lives. He said the youths, are the future of the country, stressing "what does the future now hold for any nation that watches its youths waste away through senseless bloodletting? According to Fayose, most of the cultists end up being armed robbers, having been in possession of sophisticated weapons with which they carry out their activities. "It is unfortunate that most of them (youths) have allowed their sense of reasoning to be beclouded by cult activities that will hinder them from achieving their aims and make them useful to their country", he noted.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2005 This Day.
