[allAfrica.com] Museveni to End Cattle Rustling The Monitor (Kampala) NEWS July 18, 2005 Posted to the web July 18, 2005 By David Mafabi Sironko PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has vowed to end the Karimojong cattle rustling forcefully if the warriors have failed to comply through peaceful means. Museveni said he would ensure that specialised equipment besides increasing the numbers of soldiers are put at Kaata Barracks to bar any possible Karimojong raids in Sironko district. Museveni was on Saturday at Masaba Secondary School responding to a memorandum presented by the LC5 Chairman, Mr Francis Nagimesi, about the souring relations between residents of Sironko and the Karimojong due to constant cattle raids. Nagimesi said Karimojong rustlers had left over 1,000 people in the sub- counties of Bukhalu, Muyembe and Bunambutye dead. "Over 1,500 people have been displaced and over 5,000 head of cattle has been rustled," Nagimesi said. He said because of continued Karimojong incursions, residents of the three counties had not settled to do farming and their greatest problem was famine. Nagimesi said recently when solidiers at Kaata Barracks failed to contain the Karimojong rustlers, the residents barricaded Sironko-Nakapiripiriti road to prevent the vehicles from Karamoja region to cross through Sironko.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2005 The Monitor.
