"EOHR calls upon the government to introduce new legislation to combat terrorism and speed up its steps towards political and constitutional reform," the EOHR said in a statement to CISA. The EOHR said "the savage terrorist bombings violate people's right to life which is enshrined in the constitution and international human rights instruments. The authorities must take necessary and strict measures to arrest the perpetrators and offer them a free and fair trial respecting their rights and treating them in a humane manner refraining from inhumane and degrading treatment. . .The only way to achieve security is to respect human rights values and principles." Pope Benedict XVI was "deeply saddened" to learn of the attacks and appealed "to all to renounce the way of violence which causes so much suffering to civilian populations, and instead to embrace the way of peace." He also affirmed that it was incorrect to define the attacks as anti-Christian: "I feel the intention is far more general, and not specifically against Christianity."   ===============================================================================  Copyright © 2005 Catholic Information Service for Africa.
