[allAfrica.com] [Africa_2005] Treaty Crucial for Zimbabwe's Economic Recovery - Nqakula BuaNews (Tshwane) NEWS November 18, 2005 Posted to the web November 18, 2005 By Nozipho Dlamini Cape Town Agreements on defence and security signed between South Africa and Zimbabwe, will assist the latter recover from its current political and economic crises, Minister of Safety and Security Charles Nqakula said today. Briefing the media during the signing of two historic treaties between the two states, Mr Nqakula said the agreements would also create an environment for further engagement between South African and Zimbabwe on a host of other issues, including economic and political ones. "You can't achieve economic prosperity where there is no political stability. These agreements also enjoin us to jointly find ways that could create political and economic stability in Zimbabwe," he said. The agreements, which were preceded by a ministerial meeting on defence and security this morning, establish a Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security and paves way for Zimbabwe air force personnel to be deployed in South Africa to train their South African peers. Minister of Intelligence, Ronnie Kasrils said the two governments also agreed to cooperate in, among others, combating organised and cross-border crimes and illegal migration. "During the meeting we also noted the need to review the current immigration and customs regimes between the two countries in order to improve movements of persons and goods," he said.
