[allAfrica.com] [celtel.com] AU Decides to Take Measures Against Parties Opposing Darfur Process The Ethiopian Herald (Addis Ababa) NEWS November 24, 2005 Posted to the web November 28, 2005 By ENA Addis Ababa The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU-PSC) decided to consider appropriate measures, including sanctions, to be taken against any party that will undermine or hinders the peace process in Darfur, the Sudan. In its 43rd meeting held Tuesday in Addis Ababa, the AU-PSC decided to take actions against any party that undermines the peace process in Darfur, including the Abuja talks and the violations of N'djamena Humanitarian Ceasefire Agreement as well as the Abuja Protocols in cooperation and consultation of the UN Security Council. The communiqué issued by the AU-PSC expressed concern over the recent developments particularly the violations of the Ceasefire Agreement in the Darfur region and called up on the parties to exercise maximum restraint and to abide by their commitments. The council urged parties to return immediately to Abuja for the 7th Round of the Talks without any preconditions and to ensure that the 7th Round of talks is decisive to end the conflict in Darfur. The AU-PSC also requested the Commission to ensure that invitations to the 7th Round of the Talks are extended to the two groups in the Sudanese Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A). According to the communiqué, the Council commends all countries and institutions that have taken initiative to overcome the divisions within SLM/ A and requested them to pursue their efforts in close cooperation and consultation with the AU.
