Nathaniel Daygbor The Executive Director of the Prisoner Assistance Program (PAP) Mr. Jarwlee Tweh Geegbe has alleged that the criminal justice system of Liberia is going from bad to worse. Mr. Geegbe pointed out that the justice system is rights-unfriendly, noting that especially the Criminal Court detains people without the observance of the rights of the detainees. Speaking recently in Monrovia, he said some of the criminal courts are adjudicating cases out of their jurisdictions, "detaining people they would serve when convicted, is beyond human reasoning," he said. According to him prisoners overstay in their periods of sentence. Giving example of the case of one Abraham Kaigli, aged 17, who, he said, was charged for rape by the Monrovia City Court, which does not the jurisdiction of the juvenile court, but the Monrovia City Court handled the case any. PAP Boss also gave instance of the case of Kaba Lassana, aged 27 who was convicted of prostitution by the West Point Magistrate Court and sentenced to 30 days imprisonment since 27 September 2005 is still said to be behind bars at the Monrovia Central Prison up to today. He cited another case of a boy identified as Albert Quiah, 19 years of age, who was convicted of property theft and sentenced for 60 days, but he is stilled lying at the Monrovia Central Prison, "but since July 13, of this year, he is still at South Beach or Monrovia Central Court." "We think that the newly elected government, upon taking office must strengthen the justice system of our motherland, Liberia," the PAP Boss advocated.   ==============================================================================   Copyright © 2005 The Analyst.
