[allAfrica.com] [celtel.com] AU Wants Weah to Endorse Ellen's Presidency The NEWS (Monrovia) NEWS December 19, 2005 Posted to the web December 20, 2005 Monrovia The African Union (AU) has expressed great concern over unfolding events in Liberia. The AU said if these events remain unchecked, they would undermine the democratic process. The AU pointed out that recent violence in the country has far-reaching implications for constitutional order in the country. A release issued Sunday evening quoted the AU as appealing to Mr. George Weah to embrace peace and national reconciliation, and further reaffirms the AU's endorsement of the final results of the 8 November 2005 run-off elections, as certificated by the National Elections Commission of Liberia. The African Union calls on all members of the international community who have already endorsed the certificated results of the 8 November elections, to give concrete expression to that endorsement in the face of the disturbing events. Accordingly, the AU added that recent incident has the potential to put at risk the process of democracy, reconciliation and reconstruction which finally begun to take root in the country. It can be recalled that several world leaders, including heads of reputable international organizations such as the United Nations have appealed to Mr. Weah and his Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) to accept the election result in the prime interest of peace, national reconciliation and development in war- ravaged Liberia. The CDC Standard Bearer had earlier assured the Liberian people and the world at large that he would accept the result of the elections. But after his defeat by the Unity Party Standard Bearer, Mrs. Ellen Johnson- Sirleaf, Mr. Weah along with his supporters have vehemently rejected the result citing allegation of fraud. The CDC had filled several complaints to NEC, one of which was rejected by the presiding officer hearing allegation of massive fraud. Supporters of the party have staged several illegal demonstrations in Monrovia. The demonstrations were however condemned by religious organizations and civil groups in society.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2005 The NEWS.
