[allAfrica.com] [celtel.com] We Can Destroy Any Terrorist Neighbour, Says President The Monitor (Kampala) NEWS January 31, 2006 Posted to the web January 31, 2006 By Richard Mutumba & Richard Egadu Soroti PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has said no neighbouring country can sponsor an attack on Uganda and get off scot-free. "Anybody who uses foreign interests to attack us shall be destroyed. We now have the capacity," the tough talking Museveni told the people of Teso sub- region. He was addressing his first major campaign rally at Soroti Sports Ground on Sunday. The President first addressed three mini rallies in Kasilo, Serere and Ochapa before heading to Soroti town. The President briefed the people on his government's position on the recent ruling by the International Court of Justice that found Uganda guilty of invading, plundering and abusing human rights in Congo. The ICJ said the amount of money (Shs18 trillion) Congo said Uganda should compensate them was appropriate. But Museveni said the question of compensation would be discussed between the two countries. At Kamod P/S in Kasilo community, Museveni attacked the Forum for Democratic Change presidential candidate, Dr Kizza Besigye, for allegedly telling lies including one that the NRM was planning to grab peoples' land in Teso. Museveni said FDC Secretary General Alice Alaso and Kasilo MP Elijah Okupa were aiding Besigye to spread malicious lies against the government. He challenged anybody whose land had ever been grabbed by the government in the last 20 years to come out. "These are, esabet (idiotic lies). These are not intelligent lies." Museveni said. The President, who is the presidential candidate for NRM, said he is one of the biggest land owners in the country and therefore wouldn't wish to play with any person's land. About internally displaced persons' camps, Museveni said it was the opposition that partly caused camps by indirectly supporting Kony and the LRA. He challenged Besigye to explain how one of his campaigners, James Opoka, died in the hands of the LRA. Museveni said the people were running to the camps for protection. "People didn't run to Kenya, but they moved where they were assured of protection. We protected them and eliminated the LRA terrorists," Museveni said. It was Besigye and his friends who were instead sabotaging the recruitment of the Arrow Boys militias in Teso, who helped government to foil the rebel plans," he added. On the way to Soroti town, Museveni made impromptu stopovers and addressed people who lined in some trading centres to see him.   =============================================================================   Copyright © 2006 The Monitor.
