[allAfrica.com] AU Endorses Deployment of Somalia Force The Daily Monitor (Addis Ababa) NEWS September 15, 2006 Posted to the web September 15, 2006 By Dagnachew Teklu Addis Ababa The African Union (AU) Commission passed on Thursday a decision for the immediate deployment of IGAD Peace Support Mission to Somalia (IGASOM). The decision was made after the AU Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) convened a meeting late on Wednesday In its 62nd regular session, the council adopted a decision in support of the deployment of IGASOM as per the decisions of the Extraordinary Summit held in Nairobi, on 5th September 2006. Accordingly, IGASOM will undertake the tasks aimed at providing security support for the Transitional Federal Institutions (TFIs), institutional capacity building and creating conducive conditions for dialogue and reconciliation among the political parties in Somalia The commission also called for creating the most propitious political conditions for the deployment of IGASOM and securing the necessary financial and logistical support to the mission. The commission said it would be working closely with IGAD, take all necessary steps, including consultations with European Union (EU) and other partners, on the mobilization of the required funding and logistical support for the deployment of IGASOM in Somalia as soon as possible. The commission also appreciated the outcomes of Khartoum peace talks between the TFG and Union of Islamic Courts (UIC), and reiterated its full support for the dialogue among the Somali parties. The Commission said it encourages effort to pursue peace based on the Transitional Federal Charter of Somalia. The commission called on all member states and the International Community at large to provide assistance to the war ravaged Somalia and its suffering people and support the all efforts aimed at forging peace and reconciliation in Somalia.
