[allAfrica.com] Muslim Leaders Move to Remove Terrorism Tag From Schools The Nation (Nairobi) NEWS September 19, 2006 Posted to the web September 19, 2006 By Nation Correspondent Nairobi Muslim leaders have agreed to streamline the madrassa system of education to dispel the feeling that the schools are a breeding ground for terrorists. This will be done through a national Muslim education policy, they said yesterday. Previous government efforts to regulate the system hit a snag when they raised objections, especially after the bombing in 1998 of the US embassy in Nairobi and the 2002 attack on a tourist hotel at Kikambala. The leaders claimed that they had not been consulted, and that the Government had been forced by the American government to take action. After an education meeting in Mombasa over the weekend, the leaders drawn from all the Islamic organisations in the country, agreed to push for the entrenchment of the policy in the Education Act. They would also fight for government recognition. The workshop was sponsored and organised by Muslims Education and Development Agenda Network (Medan). =============================================================================== Copyright © 2006 The Nation.
