[allAfrica.com] Islamists Lift Curfew On Mogadishu Shabelle Media Network (Mogadishu) NEWS November 19, 2006 Posted to the web November 20, 2006 By Aweys Osman Yusuf Mogadishu The curfew imposed on the capital Mogadishu on Thursday was finally over as Islamists' information secretary Abdiahman Mudey has announced the end curfew on Mogadishu Sunday. The curfew came after demonstrations staged against Islamic Courts in the capital by Khad (a narcotic leaf) consumers and sellers who opposed burning Khad worth nearly two hundred thousand dollars. One person was dead in the demonstrations. Abdirahman Mudey accused president Abdulahi Yusuf and Premier Ali Mohammed Gedi of orchestrating the protests that took place in Mogadishu Bar Ubah neighborhood after bundles of Khad filled in sacks were set on fire by Islamists. "The Islamic Courts managements have met and agreed to lift the curfew on Mogadishu", Mudey said, adding the Khad was like the wine which is taboo in Islam. "Khad can not be sold, consumed or transported to all areas administered by the Islamic Courts". He harshly blamed president Yusuf and premier Gedi for paying funds to destabilize the capital under Islamist control. "Abdulahi Yusuf and Gedi were to blame for the Khad imported at Mogadishu's airport after we burned the first one", he said. Conflicts of the government and Islamists have mounted following the collapse of peace talks that were supposed to open in the Sudanese capital Khartoum on 30 October but failed before it opened after both groups couldnot compromise conditions over who would mediate the talks. =============================================================================== Copyright © 2006 Shabelle Media Network.
