[allAfrica.com] Congo Army, LRA Clash New Vision (Kampala) NEWS November 20, 2006 Posted to the web November 21, 2006 By Emmy Allio Kampala THE Congolese Army (FARDC) clashed with 50 LRA soldiers in Ituri, northeastern Congo. FARDC liaison officer in Ituri Lt Kaba Kalonji told the UN news agency, IRIN, on Friday that Congolese soldiers clashed with the rebels at Mt. Zeu in a forest near Uganda. Kalonji did not say when the clash took place but security sources have noted increased FARDC presence on Mountain Zeu. UPDF spokesman Maj. Felix Kulayigye said it was the duty of FARDC and the UN Observer mission to Congo (MONUC) to stop Ugandan dissident groups from operating in Ituri. He said the UPDF had increased its patrols near the border because of the presence of LRA, ADF and PRA rebels in Ituri. Kulayigye denied reports in the Congolese media that the UPDF had invaded the DR Congo territory in pursuit of Ugandan rebel groups. Radio Okapi recently said MONUC was verifying reports that Ugandan soldiers entered Congo through Mountain Zeu. Radio Kandipe in Bunia also quoted Ituri district administrator Petronille Vaweka as saying that two UPDF soldiers were arrested in Kasenyi. =============================================================================== Copyright © 2006 New Vision.
