[allAfrica.com] Security Council Resolution Proves Correctness of Ethiopian Policies - Minister The Ethiopian Herald (Addis Ababa) NEWS December 8, 2006 Posted to the web December 8, 2006 By ENA Addis Ababa Minister of Information Birhan Hailu said the UN Security Council's resolution to deploy peacekeeping force in Somalia proves the correctness of the policies the Ethiopian government has been pursuing with regard to Somalia. The Minister said Ethiopia would provide the necessary assistance for the successful implementation of the Security Council resolution. Birhan told ENA yesterday that Ethiopia has repeatedly expressed its readiness to give maximum support for any resolution that could bring lasting peace in Somalia. He said the Ethiopian people and government firmly believe the resolution would highly contribute to bringing lasting peace in Somalia. He said the resolution reaffirms the acceptance by the international community of Ethiopia's policies with regard to Somalia. The deployment of the peacekeeping force would help strengthen the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TFGS) so as to protect itself and bring peace and stability to that country. Ethiopia has been providing various assistance for the TFG that has been recognized by the international community, Birhan added. He said in line with this the Ethiopian government in cooperation with the Africa Union and the Inter Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has been exerting utmost efforts to bring lasting peace to the country. The Minister called on the international community to provide the necessary assistance for the successful implementation of the resolution by the UN Security Council. The adverse activities the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) and terrorist organs sheltered under it are undertaking in Somalia would further aggravate the problems in Somalia, he said, adding UIC moves could also destabilize the region. He said the deployment of a peacekeeping force would facilitate the peace process and create a forum to bring anti-peace forces back to the diplomatic ways of dispute resolution. Birhan said the resolution would also help provide legal protection for the Federal Transitional Institutions in Somalia. =============================================================================== Copyright © 2006 The Ethiopian Herald.
