[allAfrica.com] Great Lakes Leaders to Sign Security Pact The Nation (Nairobi) NEWS December 14, 2006 Posted to the web December 13, 2006 Nairobi Heads of States from the Great Lakes region meet today at Unep headquarters in Gigiri to sign a pact on security, stability and development. The two-day summit will also be attended by the chairperson of the African Union commission, Mr Alpha Oumar Konare, and high ranking UN officials. A press release from the information desk said the pact was a result of growing awareness of the need for peace in the region. The first summit was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in November 2004. During the summit, the Heads of States adopted the Dar es Salaam Declaration, that called for peace, security, democracy and development. The leaders will sign a pact that include Programmes of Action, Legal Protocol, Special Fund for Reconstruction and Development. Great Lakes countries are Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. =============================================================================== Copyright © 2006 The Nation.
