[allAfrica.com] [Urban_Hotels_Liberia] War in Somalia - a Result of the International Community's Misguided Approach Shabait.com (Asmara) EDITORIAL December 23, 2006 Posted to the web December 24, 2006 Asmara Despite the fact that the Somali people have made clear what they want for themselves, the Security Council nonetheless passed an unfounded and reckless resolution to form a transitional government in Somalia that is neither legal nor popularly accepted. It is quite obvious that this 'government' has now given Ethiopia the guise it needed to carryout its plans of aggression on Somalia . As a result of this ill-advised resolution and the world community's misguided handling of the matter, a war has already erupted between the Somali people and Ethiopian troops bearing the crest of the unpopular transitional government. This war is neither the Ethiopian nor the Somali people's, it is rather Meles Zenawi's individual pursuit for which he is being handsomely paid by powers who want to perpetuate anarchy in Somalia . As Ethiopians themselves are saying, this war is only one man's mission and that they or even upper echelon TPLF members do not want any part of it. Still it is sad to see the lives of Ethiopian youth being carelessly sacrificed to secure the interests of external forces, not to mention the disruption of the recently acquired relative peace and stability in Somalia . The Eritrean government has always empathized with the Somali people's suffering brought about by the irresoluteness of Somali warlords and the unhelpful external interventions. Hence for the good of the Somali people as well as for the sake of regional peace, Eritrea has been repeatedly calling to the international community to refrain from taking measures that could seriously damage peace and stability in Somalia . The Eritrean government has also made it clear that the international community's role should be restricted to only supporting and encouraging the Somali people in solving their problems on their own. Unfortunately, the devious agenda of regional and global powers has no room for such manner of conflict resolution. Prolonging its stay in power against the Ethiopian people's apparent wish, the Addis regime was desperately looking for ways to distract the Ethiopian people's attention from their domestic affairs. It is no surprise then that the TPLF would look upon war on Somalia as a blessing in disguise. Considering the aggression on Eritrea , one could see that this is not the first time the regime had deceptively plunged the Ethiopian people into such a predicament to serve its own purpose. In case of the aggression against Eritrea , the TPLF had been defeated both in the battle field as well as in the court of law and is recklessly trying to avoid accountability and the implementation of a final and binding ruling. It is only natural then for the regime to look for other battlefields because it cannot survive outside the sphere of war. Unfortunately for the TPLF however, war does not prolong life; it can only shorten or end it. Thus, the regime's desperate adventurism could only lead to its demise because; 1. The suppressed voices of the Ethiopian people will eventually triumph 2. International law will prevail and the final and binding ruling regarding the Eritrean-Ethiopian border will sooner or later be implemented 3. Nothing or no one can maintain support of a tyrant for long. =============================================================================== Copyright © 2006 Shabait.com. All rights reserved.
