allAfrica.com * Civil Defence Corps to Bear Arms Daily Trust (Abuja) NEWS 12 November 2007 Posted to the web 12 November 2007 By Ahmed Abubakar Dutse Officers and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will soon begin to carry arms in accordance with the law which established the corps, its Jigawa State commandant Ahmed Danfulani has said. Danfulani spoke at a stakeholders' forum held for federal, state and local government administrators, petroleum dealers and trade unions in Dutse, the Jigawa state capital. According to the Commandant, the NSCDC (Amendment) Act of 2007 gives the corps the power to carry arms. This, he said, is to enable the corps carry out its functions effectively and efficiently. "For the purpose of efficiently carrying out (its) functions, the corps shall maintain an Armed Squad, which shall be entitled to bear firearms and deployed by the office of the Commandant-General", he said. He listed the functions of the corps to include the maintenance of peace and order, provision of security and monitoring services before, during and after electoral exercises as well as protection of government infrastructure throughout the nation. He charged participants at the symposium to try to learn and understand as much as possible about the corps, so that the corps and the general public may have harmonious understanding anywhere its members are carrying out their duties.
