[allAfrica.com] Soldier Killed As Militias Rob Food Aid Garowe Online (Garowe) NEWS 18 April 2008 Posted to the web 21 April 2008 Garowe At least one government soldier was killed in southern Somalia Friday as heavily-armed militias stormed a compound where CARE International stored food aid, sources said. The incident happened in the coastal town of 'Adale, in Middle Shabelle region north of the capital Mogadishu. Muse Mohamed Filay, the mayor of 'Adale, confirmed to Garowe Online that one soldier was killed and another wounded during the militia attack on the CARE International compound. But Mr. Filay refused to confirm reports that the attacking militia stole all the food aid inside the compound, which the aid agency planned to distribute to needy families. Witnesses in the town of 'Adale said the militia loaded some of the food aid in their vehicles before escaping. Government troops arrived in the area afterwards and were reported to be conducting an investigation. CARE officials in Nairobi, Kenya, were not immediately available for comment. Somalia is facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with 1 million people displaced internally and in need of emergency food assistance. The country's interim government, backed by Ethiopian troops, has been consumed fighting a bloody Islamist-led insurgency since early 2007. ======================================================================================== Copyright © 2008 Garowe Online.
