allAfrica.com * Bakassi - Raid And Injury Leadership (Abuja) EDITORIAL 18 June 2008 Posted to the web 18 June 2008 Cameroon has finally taken over Bakassi peninsula that once belonged to Nigeria. Some 50, 000 Nigerians have become refugees in their own country. The map of Nigeria has been altered forever, thanks to the recklessness of the Obasanjo Administration and the failure of the National Assembly to reject the illegal act. A militia from the Nigerian side was said to have attacked and killed some Cameroonian soldiers; in retaliation, Cameroonian gendarmes reportedly invaded some villages in the area, killing and abducting hundreds of Nigerians last Monday. Even residents of New Bakassi (created in Cross River State for the displaced persons) have fled in fear of the rampaging Cameroonian authorities. Nigerian security forces are not there to protect them. If funds for resettling the Nigerians have been released, they should be accounted for. The Nigerian government should send a strong warning to Cameroon and urge it to release all Nigerians held in its illegal detention camps. It is also necessary to arrest and prosecute Obasanjo and others that implemented the ruling of the International Court of Justice without obtaining the approval of the legislature as required by the constitution. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 2008 Leadership.
